Mediation

Mediation & MIAM

Mediation encourages separating couples to talk things through face-to-face with an independent third party. The mediator will meet with the couple over a series of sessions to resolve specific issues such as finances and provision for children, or they can be called upon to mediate through the entire separation process.

The mediator's role is to identify the issues you may both have and help you reach an agreement for a mutually acceptable proposal that you can discuss with your own solicitors. The mediator will not take sides, but will give you all the help and guidance you need to make clear decisions.

Lady mediating a couple's meeting

Mediation can help couples to:

  • Reduce tension by encouraging free and open discussion
  • Reach joint decisions by communicating and co-operating
  • Focus on the needs and feelings of their children
  • Come to an agreement without the added expense of going to Court

Charmaine Parrish is our Resolution-trained family mediator, which means she is a practising lawyer who has undergone extensive training in the sensitive handling of family issues.

MIAM - What Do I Do?

Attendance at a MIAM (mediation information assessment meeting) for anyone wishing to commence any applications concerning a child or financial matters is compulsory. A proposed Applicant must attend such a meeting before any application can be sent to the court for issue. There are exceptions and we can talk to you about them and whether your case is suitable for the mediation process.

Please call us on 01234 711 701 at the earliest opportunity to set up a meeting.
